For the Censorship debate I looked into photography, what things are censored, why, and if that is a good or bad thing from an artistic viewpoint.

80's and 90's.

The Eighties & Nineties


The time period saw great social, economic, and general change as wealth and production migrated to newly industrializing economies. This decade saw some bad fashion, and the rise of some musical legends that were also iconic for their bad clothing choices! The youth culture at the time was very much into drug use again, raves were the new 'in' scene/place to be.


Adam Ant was very popular in the 80's, having ten UK top 10 hits between 1980 and '83. He was well known for his wacky fashion sense, strange makeup, and hair accessories - as seen below.

New Romantics (also known as the blitz kids) were people that followed the pop culture movement in the UK that began around 1979 and peaked around 1981. Developing in London nightclubs such as Billy's and The Blitz and spreading to other major cities in the UK, it was based around flamboyant, eccentric and sometimes eclectic fashion taste - and also New Wave music.

80's fashion

Pop icons such as Madonna had a great influence on the fashion around in the 80's. The disco scene and disco music were very popular at the time too, therefore clothing trends emerged from this phase such as neon colours, netted clothing and leg warmers. The film Footloose, released in 1984 also impacted the style of this era.

Rave scene

The Rave culture was largely popular in the 80's and 90's, they were events usually held in warehouses and well known for the drug use and partying that went on at them. By 1991 organisations such as Fantazia, Universe, Raindance and Amnesia House were holding massive legal raves in fields and warehouses around the country.

Post Modernism

- Return of wit to design.

- Rejecting rules - FREEDOM

- The modernist and minimalist view 'Less is more' quoted from Mies Van der Rohe was replaced with 'less is a bore'.

- Functional/Formal shapes replaced with diverse, new shapes.

- No true meaning or purpose - humor was favored.

- Moved away from traditions and religious views.
